Turkey hopes EU to hurry up its EU accession process

STOCKHOLM (Xinhua) -- Turkey urged the European Union (EU) to hurry up in dealing with Turkey's accession into the EU here on Friday.

“We're hoping that we will be able to open more and more chapters during the Swedish Presidency, and we are hoping that Turkey's commitment to becoming a part of the European Union will enhance the process during the December summit,” said Turkish EU Minister Egemen Bagis after a meeting with the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt.

The meeting focused on Turkish EU membership negotiations and further political reforms in Turkey.

Bildt said that many changes have come over Turkey compared with 10 years ago when Turkey became a candidate for the EU member.

“Many important democratic reforms have been carried out. Turkey is also a central cooperation partner in the stability in the region,” said Bildt.

“But it is very important that Turkey will continue to carry out reforms to follow the EU rules and become a democratic Turkey. Turkey also needs to fully implement Ankara protocol,” he added.
