El Salvador player Nelson Rivera dies from injuries after being shot

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — El Salvador under-20 soccer player Nelson Rivera has died in hospital two weeks after being shot in the head during an attack in the east of the country.

The 19-year-old defender played for current champion Isidro Metapan. Club director Roberto Campos told The Associated Press that Rivera died Sunday night in intensive care after a series of operations to try and remove the bullet.
The player was injured when unknown assailants shot at the vehicle he was travelling in with two teammates, who were unharmed, Sept. 18. The three were returning to the capital after a domestic league match against Universidad.
Rivera was a member of the under-20 national team chosen for a regional qualifier at the beginning of December in Honduras.
