Pakistan Court Orders Freezing of All Bhutto Assets

ISLAMABAD A Pakistani court on Monday upheld a government request to freeze all movable and immovable assets of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, court sources said. They reported that the Ehtesab (accountability) bench of the Lahore High Court said in an interim order that all domestic and foreign assets including bank accounts of Bhutto, her husband Asif Ali Zardari and mother Nusrat Bhutto had been frozen.
It was the latest step against Bhutto, whom the government accuses, together with her jailed husband, of plundering state assets and taking huge bribes between 1993-96. Bhutto, sacked by the then President Farooq Leghari for alleged corruption, has always denied the charges and says she is the victim of a vengeful government campaign to try to end her political career. The court set May 22 as the next date for a hearing of a case filed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government against Bhutto on the basis of her tax declarations.
