Chad Government Signs Peace Deal With Southern Rebels

NDJAMENA The Chad government signed a peace deal Thursday with federalist southern rebels, which calls for a cease-fire, a general amnesty and the transformation of the insurgent group into a political party, it was announced here. The accord was signed at Donia about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Moundou by an envoy of President Idriss Deby and a senior military leader of the Armed Forces for a Federal Republic (FARF) led by Laokein Barde. The FARF is the biggest armed political group in the south of Chad. Under the terms of the accord, the national guard and nomad security forces will be withdrawn from the south and FARF soldiers integrated into the regular armed forces and the civil service, including at officer and cadre levels.
