GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA - Veteran Australian welterweight Jeff Malcolm said Sunday he has signed with U.S. promoter Don King to challenge undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) welterwight champion Ike Quartey. For 42-year-old Malcolm, who won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) welterweight title in 1994, the July bout will be the biggest of his career. The WBA is the original, the gold coast-based fighter said.

It's the title that's been held by the greats like Sugar Ray Robinson, Ray Robinson and Tommy Hearns. You just can't imagine how good it is to be fighting for a world title after all these years. Malcolm, who will leave for the United States within the next 10 days, has fought 126 professional bouts with 90 wins, 26 losses and 10 draws.

He has held Australian, Australasian, Commonwealth, Pan Asian Boxing Association and WBF titles. He lost the WBF crown in a controversial points decision to William Mcgahan in Manila in 1995. On quartey, unbeaten in 35 fights, Malcolm said: The Bloke's an outstanding fighter. I'm not going to kid myself, this is going to be a very, very tall task. A venue and precise date for the bout have not been released.
