Aqazadeh: Completion of Bushehr Plant Opens New Chapter in Tehran-Moscow Ties

MOSCOW Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Gholam Reza Aqazadeh said here Wednesday that successful completion of Bushehr power plant will open a new chapter in Tehran-Moscow ties and will assure the Iranian nation and government that Russia is serious in expanding its ties with Iran. Aqazadeh who arrived here on Tuesday on an official visit told Kremlin Spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky that Iran has endured all international pressures with the hope of completing its nuclear plant.

The Iranian deputy oil minister added that all the activities of the Bushehr nuclear plant will be for peaceful purposes. Yastrzhembsky stressed that Moscow is willing to expand all-out relations with Tehran and gives special priority to Iran in its foreign policy. The Kremlin spokesman added that Russia has been resisting pressures aimed at weakening or marring Tehran-Moscow ties. He assured that this is the stance of the Russian president, ministers of foreign affairs and nuclear energy as well as all government officials.

He pledged that the policy will continue in future. The presidential spokesman said foreign pressures cannot affect Tehran-Moscow relations. He said that Tehran-Moscow cooperation can serve as a good example for developing countries and as a proof that a superpower cannot impose its will on others. Tehran-Moscow nuclear cooperation which are based on peaceful purposes enjoy special importance, he said. He said Russia's Gazprom is participating in development project of Iran's South Pars gasfield.

He said the project concerning completion and expansion of Bushehr nuclear power station figures prominently in Tehran-Moscow cooperation and naturally Russia must make up for the delays in the project. The Kremlin spokesman stressed that Russian officials have no doubt over implementation of the project. Aqazadeh also held talks with the President of Russian Duma Gennady Selezniyev and submitted a verbal message of the Iranian Majlis Speaker Hojjatoleslam Ali Akbar Nateq Nouri to him.

The speaker of Iran's Majlis in his message to his Russian counterpart hoped that Russia would soon complete Bushehr nuclear power plant. Selezniyev said he was happy with the visit to Moscow of the Iranian official, adding that Duma would do its best to promote relations between Tehran and Moscow. The Russian official said his country firmly believed that the Iranian power plant in Bushehr was for peaceful purposes.

He said the approval of the plant by the International Atomic Energy Agency was a firm evidence in proof of it.
