Kharrazi: Iran Gives Priority to Strengthening of Ties With Neighbors

TEHRAN Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi, in a meeting with the visiting Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Manasaryan here yesterday, underscored that promotion of cordial relations with neighboring countries is a top priority in Iran's foreign policy. Expansion of economic cooperation among the regional states is the key to progress, peace and stability and strengthens the historical and cultural links between the countries of the region.

He said introduction of facilities for the private sectors in Iran and Armenia would help enhance the level of trade cooperation. Kharrazi said Iran is interested in resolving the Karabakh crisis through peaceful means. Manasaryan said Armenia regards Iran as a neighboring state which plays an effective and positive role. Armenia always appreciates the principled views of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards relations among the regional states.

He said his country is willing to develop economic cooperation with Iran. He briefed Kharrazi on the latest developments in the Caucasus and Karabakh. The visiting Armenian official also met with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Euro-American Affairs Morteza Sarmadi yesterday. In the meeting, he expressed hope that the second session of Tehran-Yerevan Joint Economic Commission would lead to further expansion of bilateral relations.

Manasaryan said that his country attaches great importance to its ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Voicing Iran's readiness to help in settlement of Karabakh crisis, Sarmadi said that the Iranian nation is concerned about continuation of the critical situation in Karbakh region. He further stressed that promotion of regional cooperation would result in establishment of peace and tranquility throughout the region.

The Iranian official expressed hope that the Karabakh crisis will be resolved through peaceful means, that a lasting peace will be established in the region and that homeless people will return to their homeland. Manasaryan, heading a delegation, arrived here on Saturday. (IRNA)
