KUWAITI Red Crescent Says It's Ready to Take Aid to Iraq

KUWAIT The Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society is prepared to distribute humanitarian aid in Iraq, its president said in remarks published Saturday. The aid would be distributed in conjunction with the Iraqi Red Crescent and delivered for ``humanitarian reasons,'' the official Kuwait news agency quoted the head of the Kuwaiti Red Crescent, Barjas al-Barjas, as saying. The Kuwaiti and Iraqi governments have not been on speaking terms since Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in 1990.

The border between the states remains sealed. But Kuwaitis have always maintained their quarrel is with the government of President Saddam Hussein, not the Iraqi people. The Kuwaiti Red Crescent, which is partly funded by the government, has for years been sending tons of food, blankets and school materials to Iraqi refugees in Iran. Al-Barjas said five volunteers were leaving Sunday for Iran to deliver food and blankets to some 3,000 Iraqi refugees.

Numerous Arab humanitarian groups and some governments have sent aid to Iraq in recent months in a bid to alleviate the shortages blamed on the sweeping UN sanctions imposed on the country since the invasion of Kuwait. (AP)
