TEHRAN -- The contemporary Iranian poet Hamid Sabzevari was honored during a ceremony in his hometown Sabzevar in Khorasan Razavi Province on Monday.

The ceremony, which was held at the Hakim Sabzevari University, had been arranged by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the Khorasan Razavi Governor Office and several cultural organizations.

During the ceremony, Culture Minister Mohammad Hosseini made a short speech about Sabzevari.

Sabzevari expressed his happiness over holding the event in a short speech during the ceremony.

He granted all the cash prizes he received during the ceremony to charity organizations in Sabzevar.

A bust of Sabzevari created by the young sculptor Hadi Arefi was unveiled at the beginning of Pasdaran Boulevard in Sabzevar on the sidelines of the ceremony.

Verses of Sabzevari’s poems have been inscribed in the nastaliq style of calligraphy at the foot of the bust.

Known as Hamid Sabzevari, Hossein-Aqa Momtaheni was born in 1925 in Sabzevar. His grandfather Mohammad-Sadeq Momtaheni was a popular poet in the town.

He began composing the poetry when he was at the age of 14. He has composed poems in different styles including couplets, sonnets and blank verse.

He is composer of the poem “Khomeini, Oh Imam!”, which was performed and recorded by a group of students weeks before the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

He then composed “USA, USA, Shame on Your Deceits!” which was performed by a chorus and solo tenor Esfandiar Qarabaghi after the occupation of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979.

His poem “This Is the Call of Freedom from the Orient” was performed by singer Mohammad Golriz after the victory of the revolution.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had previously met with officials from the organizations and urged them to arrange a very special ceremony for Sabzevari.
