TEHRAN -- The Hungarian Media Wave Festival handed out one of the Parallel Cultural Awards to the Iran-based Hungarian artist Gizella Varga Sinaii. “The award will be dedicated to me for my achievements in connecting two cultures,” Gizella Varga Sinaii previously told the Persian service of ISNA. A self-portrait painting in which she depicted herself “as a Hungarian who knows Iranian culture” was on display at the event that was held in the city of Szombathely. Fifteen paintings belonging to her collection “Travel Diary” were on display during the festival. Along with the collection, some of her video art will be displayed in a side show, and the festival will also screen a film about her, she said. Her daughter, Samira Sinaii also staged a performance about her mother’s immigration to Iran when she was young. The performance was staged in three languages and Gizella’s favorite poems were recited during the event. Samira, who has written and directed the performance, played the leading role and Chaichi Heli, Ko-máromi Judith and Jeszenszky István accompanied her. Gizella, wife of leading Iranian filmmaker Khosro Sinaii, was born in 1944 in Chakvar, Hungary. She is a graduate of art from Vienna and is a member of the Iranian Women’s Dena Painting Group.
