“Considering the variety of film genres in the competition, it has been difficult for us as the jury to say which film is the best” the jury said in its statement during the closing ceremony of the festival on June 8.
“Therefore, in parallel to the best film and best student film awarded to two fictions films, we unanimously agreed to allocate a special award to the Iranian documentary ‘Broken Border’, directed by Keyvan Karimi,” the jury added.
The jury also said that the film received the honorable mention for the difficult issue it raises and “its capacity to emanate an unexpected poetry despite its hard topic.”
“Broken Border” won the best documentary award at the Filofest, the International Student Film and Video Festival in Slovenia in December 2012.
“Do You Know What Love Is” by Belgian director Leni Huyghe was crowned the best film and “Well of Adam” by Turkish director Veysel Cihan Hizar won the best student film award at the Leiden festival.
Dutch filmmaker/producer Jan Willem van Dam, Leiden-based French producer Julie Périon, and Dutch film scholar Peter Verstraten were on the panel.
