TEHRAN – Iran’s Screening Council has provided the facility for filmgoers to enjoy a 50% discount in cinema ticket price during the holy month of Ramadan, beginning on July 10 this year.
Theater owners are also free to screen movies until late at night even until sahar (dawn), spokesman of the council Habib Kavosh said here on Tuesday.
The program has been established to lessen the loss of box office receipts during the month, which is the slow season for Iranian cinema.
A few years ago, the Azan to Azan project, a program for screening films in large Iranian cities until late at night during the month of Ramadan, was established and warmly welcomed.
However, the project was halted after several clerics raised objections to the project since they believed the entertainment prevented people from contemplating about God and the Quran.
Kavosh also said that several films have been selected to be premiered in Iranian movie theaters to better brighten up Id al-Fitr, the celebration marking the end of the month of Ramadan.
“Corridor” by Behruz Shoeibi, “Hush… Girls Don’t Scream” by Puran Derakhshandeh, “The Fourth Child” by Vahid Musaian and “Nowhere, Nobody” by Ebrahim Sheybani are among the new movies.
