“The Sinners” nominated for best film award at Madrid festival

TEHRAN -- The tightly plotted Iranian film noir “The Sinners” has been nominated for the Best Foreign Feature Film Award at the 3rd Madrid International Film Festival.
 
Directed by Faramarz Qaribian, “The Sinners” and nine other films from other countries will be contending for the award.
 
“Azooma” by South Korean director Jiseung Lee, “Amorous Pancho Villa” by U.S. filmmakers Lourdes Deschamps and Jorge Rubio Salazar, “Love’s Improvisations” by Lebanese director Youssef El Deeb, and “The Pear of Jorge” by Spanish director Pablo Fernandez-Vilalta are also among the nominees. 
 
Among the nominees also are Chile-Argentina joint production “Salt” directed by Diego Rougier, “Captain Orellana and the Possessed Village” by Guatemalan director Javier Tessari, “The Pear of Jorge” by Spanish director Pablo Fernandez-Vilalta, “180º” by Mexican director Fernando Kalife, “Talking to the Trees” by Italian director Ilaria Borrelli, and “Surkhaab” by Indian director Vivek Kumar.
 
Faramarz Qaribian, Homayun Ershadi, Rambod Javan, Shaqayeq Farahani, Bahareh Kian-Afshar and Mohammad Motevaselani starred in the film.
 
“The Sinners” opens on the streets of Tehran, where a woman who developed an independent streak during seven years in the United States meets a violent end. 
 
Many people wished her dead but who could be enough of a sinner to kill this woman? Two police detectives interview the suspects, revealing past events and motives through classic noir flashbacks.
 
Winners will be announced during the closing ceremony of the festival today evening.
