TEHRAN -- The 34th edition of the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) has honored director/writer Asghar Farhadi with a best screenplay award for “The Past”, organizers have announced.

The French-language film, which is Farhadi’s first project shot outside of his homeland, is about an Iranian man named Ahmad who returns to Paris from Tehran after a four-year separation, upon his French wife Marie’s request, in order to finalize their divorce.

The film brought its French star Berenice Bejo the Palme d’Or for best actress at the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2013.

The DIFF announced its winners during a ceremony in the South African city on July 27. The best film award went to Japanese director Sion Sono for “The Land of Hope”, and Canadian actor and filmmaker Xavier Dolan won the best director award for “Laurence Anyways”.

David and Eitan Cunio shared the best actor award for their roles in “Youth” by Israeli director Tom Shoval.
