Iran’s Rakhshan Bani-Etemad to head Busan filmfest jury

TEHRAN – Iranian filmmaker Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, famous for the depiction of social problems, will preside over the jury for the New Currents section at the 18th edition of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), which will be running from October 3 to 12, organizers have announced.
 
The section is dedicated to films from new Asian directors. Two works are awarded in this category.
 
The artistic director of Critic’s Week at Cannes Film Festival, Charles Tesson; the chief film critic of the Variety, Scott Foundas; Japanese director, Aoyama Shinji; and, South Korean filmmaker, Chung Ji-Young are other members of the jury.
 
Bani-Etemad’s credits include “Canary Yellow”, “Foreign Currency”, “Nargess”, “The Blue-Veiled”, “The May Lady”, “Under the Skin of the City” and “Mainline”.
 
She also was the head of the jury of the Muhr Asia-Africa Documentaries section of the 5th Dubai International Film Festival in 2008.
 
Iranian director Mehdi Parizad’s “Sarikand” is due to go on screen in A Window on Asian Cinema, a section of the BIFF, which screens the new or the most-talked-about films of the year by talented Asian filmmakers.
