TEHRAN -- A troupe directed by Masud Kimiaii performed a reading of “Two Clowns and a Half” for a packed house in Tehran on Saturday night to raise funds for the treatment of actor Majid Bahrami, who is struggling with cancer.

A large number of celebrities attended the performance, which was held at the main hall of the City Theater Complex.

The stars had difficulty in entering the complex due to the large number of people who had flocked into the courtyard to buy a ticket for the play. The guests were asked to sign a registry book before entering the hall.

A white banner bearing a picture of Bahrami and a note reading “Step by step with you” was set up in front of the main entrance.

The play was performed by Negar Javaherian, Saber Abar and Ali Sarbi. The reading came to an end with a concert by Miraza, a music band led by Babak Mirzakhani.

Shortly after, Javaherian called Kimiaii to the stage.

“I am not able to say anything about the Bahrami’s illness or about solicitation,” Kimiaii said on the stage.

“Usually, artists do not need help… they are well aware of evils and know how to deal with them, but still sometimes we need to help them,” he added.

The meeting went on with a reading of a letter Bahrami had sent to his friend director Reza Servati via email. While Servati was to read it to the audience, instead he handed it over to actor Reza Kianian to read.

“I’m a child of theater… I’m sick. The ill-natured Crab has challenged me again. You have come together for the my sake. I tell myself ‘Hey man! Don’t cry.’ Theater is a dark room full of the cold lavas of the sun, where people gather to share their grief and to heal pain. Theater will save us, heal us and it is our last hope. I still breathe among you and humbly, I love you,” Bahrami wrote in the letter.

Stage director Jalal Tehrani and the writer of “Two Clowns and a Half” also helped the troupe in performing the play.

Bahrami was diagnosed with a kind of blood cancer in 2011. He was dispatched to Germany to receive treatment and he returned to Tehran in 2012 last year in good health.

However, the disease returned several months ago. He is currently hospitalized in a clinic in Tubingen, Germany to receive treatment.
