TEHRAN -- Austria’s Festival 4020 Artistic Director Peter Leisch has traveled to the southern Iranian city of Hormozgan to delve deeply into the music being performed in this region.
He saw a concert of this music performed by a group composed of vocalist Alireza Qorbani, Kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, santur player Ali Bahramifard and percussionist Alireza Molla-Hosseini at the festival in April 2013.
The performance gave him the incentive to visit the region in order to learn more about the origins of the music for a study project, Leisch told the Persian service of IRNA on Friday.
He described Iran as a diverse continent of the music of the world and said that Iran enjoys a unique variety of music, which has the potential to influence the world.
Leisch has met a number of musicians in southern Iran including Qanbar Rastgu, Gholam Margir and Pur Mohammad.
The Festival 4020 plans to put the spotlight on Iranian regional music this year.
The festival focused on Iranian music in 2013 by organizing the Persia-Mirror program, which featured performances by Iranian musicians from across the world.
The Festival 4020 was established in March 2001 to present an abundance of young composers, musicians and ensembles in the northern Austrian city of Linz.
