TEHRAN -- The Austro-Iranian Symphony Orchestra (AISO) will perform Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 during a concert at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall in September.

“The performance most likely will be well received since the symphony has not been performed in Iran for a period of 36 years,” orchestra director Maziar Yunesi said in a press release on Wednesday.

The rehearsals will begin next week and some guest members will accompany the orchestra during the performances, he added.

He said that maestros Azin Movahhed, Nader Mashayekhi and Mohammadreza Tafazzoli will collaborate with the orchestra in arranging musical pieces.

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich (1906–1975) was a Russian composer and pianist, and a prominent figure of 20th-century music. The Ninth Symphony (1945) is an ironic Haydnesque parody, which intentionally failed to satisfy Stalin’s demands for a “hymn of victory”.
