The series, which is still untitled, will be produced in 20 episodes, director Mohammad Moslemi said in a press conference in Tehran on Friday. “There are only three theaters in Tehran to stage performances for children. People have not warmly received the plays that have been performed over the years,” he added. “Nowadays, they prefer to watch theatrical productions in the comfort of their homes,” he stated. He lamented the dearth of domestic movies and plays for Iranian children and said, “The necessary food for thought is currently given to our children by foreign films and other entertainment productions, most of which are not in agreement with our culture.” The series will be produced to the fill the void and ease part of the shortage, Moslemi noted. The plays for the series will be written by prominent children’s authors Maryam Sa’adat, Mohamadreza Shams, Sara Mokhtari and Amir Mashhadi-Abbas. Every part of the series will include a musical puppet show, which is scheduled to be directed by Sa’adat. Moslemi’s soul mates Hamid Goli and Ali Forutan are other members the troupe, which has mostly appeared in “Fitileh, Jom’eh Tatileh”, a TV program that has been broadcast on Friday mornings on Iranian TV over the past seven years. The group, which often performs musical comedies, gets its name from the program. The name of the program refers to a rhythmic rhyme that customarily was said by Iranian schoolchildren on Thursday, announcing that tomorrow is Friday, a day off. Majid Qannad was a member of the troupe, but he separated from the group in December 2010. The Fitilei Uncles has regularly been seen at charity events. The troupe gave several performances for Afghan children in refugee camps in Iran.
