altTEHRAN -- Organizers of the Iftar Spreads Photo Exhibit have rushed to raise funds for the famine-wracked people of Somalia.

A total of 40 photos by 22 photographers have been put on display at the showcase, which is a side section of the 19th International Holy Quran Exhibition.

Books containing the photos on display are also on sale, secretary of the contest Mohammad-Saleh Hojjatoleslami told the Persian service of IRNA on Friday.

Iftar means the evening meal for breaking the fast during Ramadan, but the photos selected for the show are not to encourage the visitors to eat, Hojjatoleslami said, adding that they are to reflect the spiritual effect of fasting on body and soul of an individual.

The photos will be on show for one more week until August 26.

On July 20, the United Nations declared a famine in two regions of southern Somalia owing to the worst drought in decades, and appealed for urgent resources to assist millions of people in desperate need of help.

Iran has been sending several shipments of humanitarian to Somalia over the past months..
