TEHRAN
-- A design for tomb of Iranian children’s writer Mehdi Azar Yazdi was unveiled on Saturday in his homeland Yazd.

The design, which has been created by Seyyed Abbas Qayyumi, was selected from among 75 other plans submitted to the Mehdi Azar Yazdi Foundation, the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency reported.

The foundation has allocated 1.5 billion rials (over $140,000) for construction of the tomb, which will begin at the end of summer according to what has been reported.

The exterior design is based on the shape of the Persian number of eight, which symbolizes Azar Yazdi’s eight-volume stories “Good Stories for Good Children”, which earned him national fame.

Also considered in the creation of the design was a shape resembling a page from a book, which would represent the author’s simple life and his genuine desire for reading books, has. 

Azar Yazdi passed away at the age of 88 in Tehran in July 2009. His body was buried at the Khorramshad Cemetery in Yazd, in accordance with his will.

Azar Yazdi was also author of “The Naughty Cat”, “The Playful Cat”, “Simple Stories”, “Poetry of Sugar and Honey” and “Masnavi of Good Children”.

His “Good Stories for Good Children” won a UNESCO prize in 1966 and was selected as Iran’s best book of the year in 1967. 

He simplified stories are from classic Persian masterpieces such as the Gulistan, Masnavi-e Manavi, Marzbannameh, Sinbadnameh, and other stories in the collection are from the Holy Quran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad (S) and his Household (AS).

His book “Adam” was chosen as Iran’s best book of the year in 1968.
