TEHRAN -- Artist Abbas Abbasi is convinced that the walls in Tehran are suffering from cheap murals appearing here and there, and have created an unpleasant view. “The urban space and its beautification have turned out to be a matter of taste. The urban structure of today does not match our artistic and spiritual atmosphere. Unfortunately, they look like high school works of art,” Abbasi told the Persian service of MNA on Monday. “If foreign artists come to visit our country, they would never learn anything from these paintings, and they would not be able to take any positive experiences back home,” he said. He added, “The countries which enjoy rich culture, precious artworks and murals are noticed everywhere, but our paintings on the walls promote boredom.” Abbasi said that there is great deal of disharmony in the visual images across the city, adding, “Tehran’s Beautification Organization must organize better programs and should not squander its budget on shoddy works.” He continued, “Tehran murals are not compatible with the culture of its citizens and the walls are suffering from cheap paintings. For example, on one of the walls in Vali-e Asr Square, there is a beautiful miniature work attracting the foreign visitors and reporters to take photos, while a bit upper on the wall, the martyrs portrayed reflect no feelings and are quite simplistic.” However, we can provide an enjoyable atmosphere for our citizens with precious Persian miniature artworks, he said, adding, “We are Muslims, and we must make use of paintings with spiritual themes. Miniature possesses these fine characteristics and we fortunately have great masters who can help.” “The tile works of Isfahan and Yazd are still beautiful and pleasurable to see. In the complicated world of today invaded by Western culture, works of nature and religious themes can add joy and happiness to our citizens,” he concluded.
