TEHRAN - Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC) director put forward a proposal to name one of the streets of Ardebil after war filmmaker Rasul Mollaqolipur.
Shafi Aqamohammadian announced his proposal during the opening ceremony of the Milad-e Sorkh Festival on Sunday in Ardebil.
“Mollaqolipur belongs to Iranian cinema but his presence should be more tangible in his birthplace. While all Ardebil officials are present for this cinematic gathering, I propose that one of the streets of this city should be named after this committed grand artist,” he said.
Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Javad Shamaqdari and several other provincial officials and artists attended the ceremony that was held at Ardebil’s Fadak Cultural Complex.
At the event, a film made by Mollaqolipur went on screen and afterwards his wife extended her thanks to the festival’s officials.
“I am really happy to see Rasul’s name alive not only in his hometown but also all over the country,” she mentioned.
Mollaqolipur, whose films directly or indirectly centered on the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, died of a heart attack at age 51 in 2007. Initial Persian news reports had prematurely announced that he had died in a car accident.
In the early years of his filmmaking career, Mollaqolipur focused on stories about the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, so initially, he was regarded as a Sacred Defense filmmaker.
Later, he began to criticize the postwar situation in his films -- an attitude that was not officially welcomed.
The first edition of the Milad-e Sorkh Festival is to be held between July 3, the birthday of Imam Hussein (AS), and July 6, the birthday of Hazrat Abbas (AS), brother of Imam Hussein (AS). It is anticipated that the event will be held annually.
The festival aims to highlight films with religious and spiritual subjects mainly on Islamic culture and the household of Prophet Muhammad (S).
