TEHRAN -- Iranian literati gathered in Tehran’s Book City on Tuesday to celebrate the 90th birthday of Rumi expert and historian Mohammad-Ali Movahhed.

Director of Tehran’s Book City Mehdi Firuzan, Ahmad Samiei Gilani, Zia Movahhed and Mohammadreza Shafiei Kadkani made brief speeches in honor of Movahhed.

Born in Tabriz, Movahhed is a graduate of law and political science from the University of Tehran. He has always done research throughout his life, and has written and translated numerous books. The book on Shams-i Tabrizi is one of his greatest works on the subject of mysticism.

Firuzan called Movahhed a person who enjoys a type of modesty both in his knowledge and in behavior.

“Movahhed is an honest man. His thoughts are not complicated. He is seeking the truth; he is wise and is after new things. His translations even show that he has a good taste in literature,” Samiei Gilani said at the ceremony.

Author Hushang Moradi Kermani who was coworker of Movahhed at the Academy of Persian Language and Literature, praised him for his serious manner of working.

Academy’s director Gholamali Haddad-Adel also at the ceremony next referred to Movahhed as an expert on Rumi’s Masnavi.

“His great attention to Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1273) and his works is a big honor for us. We are proud to have an individual in the country who knows Rumi well and has made efforts to introduce him to the world,” Haddad-Adel said.

The ceremony continued with Firuzan handing Movahhed his bust and an honorary plaque for his 90th birthday anniversary.

Movahhed expressed his happiness to those who had taken part in his ceremony, saying he was honestly thrilled by the warm words and hospitality of friends.
