“Given the sanctions that have been imposed (on Iran), the government should pay serious and deeper attention to the people’s living conditions,” Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani said on Tuesday during the first day of the two-day meeting of the assembly.

He also said that all organs should accept that the views of the country’s intellectuals should be used to this end.

Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani added that an Islamic government is a government that makes efforts to resolve the problems in cooperation with the people and fulfill their rights.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he commented on the resistance economy, which has been proposed by the Supreme Leader to deal with the sanctions, and said, “One of the components of the resistance economy is contentment.”

He stated, “Officials and civil servants – because they have the public purse in their hands – think that they should spend it (wastefully),” while this is not the case in many other countries.

Both producers and consumers should take this issue into consideration, Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani added.

On the 2013 presidential election, he expressed hope that the situation would be prepared in such a way that a president would be elected who would serve the people’s interests.

Commenting on the summit of the Non-Aligned movement, which was held in Tehran from August 26 to 31, he noted, “The summit showed that our system has not been isolated.”
