TEHRAN - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has said that Iran will compel the enemies to keep yearning to inflict a defeat on the Islamic Republic.
The Leader made the remarks during an address to thousands of people in Bojnourd, the capital city of the northeastern Iranian province of North Khorasan, on Wednesday.
Ayatollah Khamenei began an eight-day visit to North Khorasan Province on Wednesday and was warmly welcomed by tens of thousands of people upon his arrival.
In his speech, the Leader stated, “The issue of sanctions is not a new issue and has existed since the victory of the Islamic Revolution (in 1979), but the enemies are making efforts to blow the issue of sanctions out of proportion, and, unfortunately, certain people inside are assisting them.”
The reason for the intensification of the sanctions against Iran has been their ineffectiveness, Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding, “The United States and certain European countries are making efforts to deceitfully relate the sanctions to the nuclear energy issue, but the nuclear energy issue did not exist when the sanctions began at the outset of the victory of the Islamic Revolution.
“They are deceitfully saying that if the Iranian nation abandons nuclear energy, the sanctions will be lifted. However, the main reason for the imposition of these illogical sanctions, which is regarded as an act of barbarism, is their hostility toward the Iranian nation.
“Sanctions are actually a war with a nation. But, with the grace of God, the enemies will be defeated by the Iranian nation in this war as well.”
“However, the sanctions create some problems, and certain acts of imprudence probably compound the problems. But these problems are not issues that the Islamic Republic of Iran cannot manage to resolve,” the Leader added.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei commented on the unrest created in Tehran on October 3 by a number of people, who used the sharp fall in the value of the Iranian rial as a pretext to disturb the peace.
He said, “For about two or three hours, a number of people set some garbage cans on fire on two Tehran streets, and, immediately, officials of certain countries flouted diplomatic (protocol) and childishly expressed delight. But they should be asked, ‘Is Iran’s economic situation worse or (that of) those European countries that have been experiencing street protests since about a year ago?’”
“Your problems are much more complicated than Iran’s problems because your economy has stagnated,” the Leader said, addressing Western countries.
“Be aware that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not be brought to its knees due to these problems, and, with the grace of God, it will overcome the problems and will once again make the enemies remain yearning to defeat the Iranian nation,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.
In his speech, the Leader also advised the country’s officials to effectively fulfill their duties and to remain vigilant.
He also asked them to pay due attention to the issue of national production and to take the measures necessary to promote it.
