TEHRAN - Iran is pursuing the case of a national who recently died in Dutch police custody in the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands, the Iranian Embassy in The Hague said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old was arrested by the police on Sunday and died hours later.

Part of the statement reads that the Dutch police is investigating the case and the results of the probe will be announced to judicial authorities so that they can issue a verdict in regard to the cause of his death and also clarify whether the police had been involved in the incident or not.

The Iranian Embassy has insisted that the police should not bury his body until the family of the deceased moves to the Netherlands.

On Tuesday, the Iranian consul met with the director of consular and immigration affairs of the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during which the Dutch official expressed regret over the incident and promised to pursue the case.

According to the investigations into the personal belongings of the Iranian national, he was recognized as Hossein Mahboubi, who was based in the United Arab Emirates and traveled on his Schengen visa to the Netherlands.
