TEHRAN – MP Ali Motahari warned on Tuesday that Labor, Cooperatives and Social Welfare Minister Abdolreza Sheikholeslami will face impeachment if he does not fire head of the Social Security Fund Saeed Mortazavi.
The warning by Motahari came two days after eight MPs declared that the chairmanship of Mortazavi over the Social Security Fund runs contrary to law and asked the minister to fire him otherwise Majlis will “use legal tools”, indirectly suggesting that the minister would be impeached.
A number of MPs hold Mortazavi, the former Tehran prosecutor general, partly responsible for the Kahrizak incident, in which three inmates lost their lives.
Administrative Court of Justice had earlier issued a ruling declaring the chairmanship of Mortazavi over the fund illegal.
Motahari said according to a parliamentary ratification Mortazavi cannot hold his current post and the minister should appoint another person to the job.
“We are waiting to see whether the administration will act to its legal commitment or not. If law is not observed I personally have decided to impeach the minister,” the vocal MP told reporters.
Some MPs argue that Minister Abdolreza Sheikholeslami does not have the authority to fire Mortazavi without the consent of the president.
“Now the minister should take steps to fire Mortazavi… and we do not care whether the minister has authority or he is under the influence of Mr. Ahmadinejad.”
