Late on Monday, a car bomb targeted a military checkpoint in Mosul, 390 kilometers (240 miles) north of Baghdad, killing eight people and injuring eighteen, including several soldiers, Reuters reported.

"The blast destroyed everything. It looks like there was nothing here before the explosion," said a policeman at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists.

On the same day, gunmen using silenced weapons killed the bodyguard of a Kurdish member of Mosul's provincial council and three other people.

The incidents are the latest in a string of attacks that have left scores of people dead across the country this year.

Violence has increased in Iraq since December 2011, when an arrest warrant was issued for fugitive Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Shia Muslims.
