TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rohani on Wednesday expressed deep concern about the unfolding developments in the Middle East, saying that the people in the region cannot tolerate a new war.
Rohani, who was addressing members of his cabinet, said, “Any kind of (military) adventurism will leave irreparable damages on the stability of the region and the world and it will only lead to the spread of extremism and terrorism in the Middle East.”
The comments by Rohani come as the West is preparing for imminent military action in Syria under the allegation that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons against its own people. The Syrian government has rejected the claim and said the opposition forces are behind the use of chemical weapons and agreed with a United Nations inspection to verify the matter.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the main victims of chemical weapons and a forerunner in fight against these inhumane arms, categorically condemns any use of such weapons.”
Rohani further said that the bullying language by the Western powers against sovereign states is a clear threat to the international stability and security.
“According to information we have, a group seems to be using political and media propaganda to divert attention from the facts on the ground in Syria in order to benefit from the use of chemical weapons and impose its dangerous and short-sighted views,” he explained.
He called on international organizations to identify the perpetrators behind the use of chemical weapons in Syria on the basis of an impartial investigation.
“The UN should use the facts on the ground,… and the records showing the transfer of chemical materials to the extremists from outside Syria, in its investigation of the recent incident.”
The president said that the UN should announce the result of its investigations “in a transparent way”.
