TEHRAN – Italian Foreign Minister has called on the West to avoid its past mistakes and seize the opportunity to have dialogue with Iran.
In a Friday interview with Italy’s Radio Radicale, Bonino noted that the window of opportunity to interact with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will not remain open permanently, Press TV reported.
The top Italian diplomat called for more visits by Western officials to Iran, saying she is optimistic that the West will develop a better understanding of developments in Iran.
Pointing to the West’s concerns about Iran's nuclear energy program, Bonino said the Western countries should not miss the chance like in the past as the time factor is a fundamental element in the current circumstances.
Bonino also described the economic factor as a key issue in Iran-West interactions.
Last week, the Italian foreign minister visited Iran, which was the first visit by an Italian foreign minister to Tehran in nearly 10 years.
She described her meetings with senior Iranian officials as constructive, emphasizing Tehran and Rome enjoy great potential to strengthen mutual ties.
Her visit followed a trip by Deputy Foreign Minister Lapo Pistelli in August, shortly after President Hassan Rouhani’s inauguration.
