TEHRAN – Iran on Wednesday expressed support for the Iraqi government’s crackdown on terrorists following the recent violent developments in the country and called on the Iraqi people to maintain unity.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran, along with the international community, a majority of political parties in Iraq, and the people of this country, supports the Iraqi government’s measures to deal with armed terrorist groups that have been attempting in recent months to make the defenseless people of Iraq the target of their terrorist attacks after entering (Iraq) through crisis-hit Syria,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Marzieh Afkham said on Wednesday.
Afkham also said that dialogue was the only way to settle political disputes in Iraq and called for unity among people of different sects in the Arab country.
According to Reuters, militants stormed police stations in several cities of Iraq's western province of Anbar on Wednesday, seizing weapon caches, and freeing prisoners.
