TEHRAN – At least 18 people were killed on Tuesday when a bus plunged into a valley near the village of Polur in the northern Iranian province of Mazandaran Province.

The bus carrying 30 passengers from the city of Gorgan to the capital Tehran plunged off the road into the valley at 5:30 local time.

Statistics compiled by UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) show that road accidents occur in Iran at a rate 20 times higher than the world average, with nearly 28,000 people killed and 300,000 people injured and disabled annually in the country of 75 million.
