“Currently, Iran has the worst model in consumption of water and energy,” Masoumeh Ebtekar said as she visited Kurdistan Province.
She said if water consumption by households and agricultural sector continues in this way “the nature and resources” will be destroyed.
Ebtekar added natural resources have been used excessively over the past years.
“We should first know about resources and then make plans based them so that it would not lead to environmental disasters.”
The chairwoman of the environment organization said the fact that Lake Urmia has dried up greatly is due to lack of planning.
Lake Urmia is the third largest salt water lake on earth whose water has dried up more than 70 percent over the past few years.
She said about 90 percent of water resources in the country are used wasted in the agricultural sector.
An overuse of waters flowing into Lake Urmia has been cited as the main reason for the current situation.
