TEHRAN – People in Tehran staged a gathering on Tuesday afternoon to announce their support for the Iraqi people in their campaign against terrorists.
The demonstrators also expressed support for protection of the holy shrines in the country.
The gathering, named ‘labbaik’, condemned actions taken by terrorist groups, specifically ISIL in Iraq.
People from different walks of life attended the gathering.
Saeed Jalili, the former secretary of Supreme National Security Council, was scheduled to attend the gathering and make a speech.
Militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have captured several areas in northern and western Iraq over the past two weeks, and are threatening to dismember Iraq and unleash all-out sectarian warfare with no regard for national borders.
The ISIL militants have vowed to continue their military offensive until they reach Baghdad, but Iraqi forces and around 1.5 million volunteers have succeeded in halting the terrorists’ advance and pushing the militants back in some areas.
