The Iranian basketball team won the title of the 5th FIBA Asia Cup for a second time in a row on Saturday.
In the match held at the Wuhan Gymnasium, in Wuhan, China, Memi Becirovic’s men defeated Chinese Taipei 89-79
Center Hamed Haddadi led Iran’s win with 21 points with Mohammad Jamshidi adding 20 points.
Center-forward Quincy Davis III topped the team's scoring with 19 points, while guard Ray Chen registered 16 points for Chinese Taipei.
“We achieved two things today,” beamed Iran coach Becirovic.
“We did a lot of new things, but we also had control of the scoreboard,” he added.
There certainly were moments when Iran looked shaky in their perimeter defense, but Becirovic came up with an explanation.
“We have been trying out various things with our guards. None of these guys were starting guards in our main team. In fact, I’m very happy the way they worked. It wasn’t perfect, but it was never meant to be. We aimed making progress and we achieved that,” he said.
Defending champion Iran beat Japan 66-56 in its first match in Pool A. Iran was defeated against host China 64-51 but gained two victories over Indonesia (77-47) and India (62-49) in preliminary round.
In the quarter-final, Iran beat WABA fellow Jordan 75-60 to qualify for the semis.
Iran beat the Philippines 76-55 and booked a berth in the final for the second successive year.
In the 4th FIBA Asia Cup Iran beat host Japan 53-51.
