TEHRAN - Super heavyweight weightlifter Behdad Salimi will carry Iran’s flag at the 2014 Asian Games opening ceremony.
The 17th edition of the Asian Games will be held in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4, 2014.
Salimi won the gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China with a total of 440kg.
The weightlifter claimed a gold medal in the 2010 World Weightlifting Championships in Antalya, Turkey with 453.
Salimi also won a gold medal in the world championships once again one year later, where the Iranian Hercules hoisted 464kg in total in Paris, France.
The 24-year-old lifter seized a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics Games in London, lifting 455kg in total.
“It’s for the first time I’ve been chosen as the Iran’s flag-bearer and I am so happy. Undoubtedly, It's on a par with winning an Olympics gold medal for me,” Salimi said.
“After Mahmoud Namjoo and Hossein Rezazadeh I am Iran’s third weightlifter to carry the flag. People’s expectations are very high and I will try to fulfill their expectations,” he added.
Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin has also been chosen as the flag-bearer of Iran in the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Nanjing, China, from August 16 to 28.
In March, the female taekwondo player claimed a gold medal in the 10th World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Taipei, Taiwan.
