TEHRAN - The head of secretariat of the National Council for the Elderly said on Tuesday that 11,722 senior citizens over the age of 100 live in Iran.

Sadeq Rostami said according to statistics in 2011, over 6 million Iranian citizens over the age of 60 reside in Iran and Tehran, Alborz and Semnan provinces have the highest number of citizens followed by Gilan, Markazi, Mazandaran and East Azerbaijan provinces respectively.

However, Sistan and Baluchestan Province holds the least number of senior citizens followed by Hormozgan and Boushehr Provinces.

Over 8.2 percent of Iran’s population is considered old, Rostami said with grave concern, adding that the figure shows how Iran’s population is rapidly aging, an issue that he said shouldn’t be easily brushed away.
