TEHRAN – Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Director Ali Akbar Salehi says the Islamic Republic of Iran has started redesigning the heart of the heavy-water reactor in the city of Arak in order to allay the concerns of the West and prove that the nuclear plant’s activities are completely civilian.
The redesign process of the Arak heavy-water reactor is being conducted by experts and staff at the nuclear plant, and the Iranian Foreign Ministry has been informed of the “technical details of the redesign process at the reactor,” Salehi said in a televised interview on Wednesday morning, the Fars News Agency reported.
According to Iran’s plan, the Arak reactor will replace the Tehran Research Reactor as the country’s center for the production of medical radioisotopes for cancer patients.
The Arak heavy-water reactor is one of the issues being discussed in the negotiations between Iran and the 5+1 group (the United States, France, Britain, Russia, China, and Germany), which are being held with the goal of reaching a final comprehensive deal on Tehran's nuclear energy program.
