Russia and China have also joined the supporters of Syria since they have realized that “the situation in the world is changing,” Ali Akbar Velayati said in an address to a gathering of a number of personnel of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps in Tehran on Thursday.
“The Islamic Republic will stand against all those who are making efforts against Syria and will support the Syrian government,” said Velayati, who formerly served as Iran’s foreign minister.
However, Velayati said that there are faults in the governing system of Syria ruling system and that the Syrian officials acknowledge the problems and have started implementing reforms.
Iran has repeatedly called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to implement the necessary reforms, he added.
He went on to say that the “known elements affiliated with the Zionists” in the region and those Arab governments that have not experienced democracy are stating that Syria should be democratized.
Support for the Syrian insurgents is meant to “derail” the Islamic Awakening movement in the region, Velayati said.
However, he said, Muslims will not ally themselves with the “enemies of Islam” to topple the Syrian government, which is on the front line of the resistance against the Zionists.
