Imposing new one-sided sanctions against Iran over its nuclear energy program shows Washington’s “hypocrisy”, a political analyst said.
“A new round of sanctions against Iran, must be against the Iranian people because there is no way to shield the people of a country from the impacts of sanctions and the U.S. even doesn’t really care that the Iranian people would be affected by the sanctions”, Co-editor of Dissident Voice Kim Petersen said in a phone interview with Press TV’s U.S. Desk.
“What are the sanctions actually for? What is the violation that supposedly Iran is committing? It is because the Iranian government seeks its right to develop nuclear technology (which) is permitted under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty”, he argued.
“Isn’t this hypocrisy? hypocrisy considering that the U.S. allows Israel to skirt the IAEA in holding onto its nuclear weapons, hypocrisy considering that the U.S. does not adhere to article six of the NPT and begin disarming his own nuclear arsenal. These are the questions that come up when you consider the one-sided sanctions by the U.S.”, Petersen said.
The Obama administration imposed new sanctions against Tehran, targeting the Iranian currency, the Rial, and the country’s auto industry.
President Obama ordered the new sanctions on Monday in a move to put more pressure on Iran over its peaceful nuclear program.
The United States alleges that Iran’s nuclear energy program is not peaceful, an accusation denied by Tehran.
