.jpg) TEHRAN - Electricity consumption in Iran rose by 3.7 gigawatts (GW) on Monday compared to the same day in the past year, IRIB reported.
The peak of consumption hit 44.151GW. Some 1.301GW of electricity has been stored at domestic power plants.
Iran exchanged 1.566GW of electricity with its neighboring countries on Monday.
The country exported 1.198GW of electricity to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Armenia, and Turkey, while imported 386 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Armenia and Turkmenistan.
Iran has constructed power plants twice as many as the average number of power plants which have been constructed in the world during the past decade, deputy energy minister Mohammad Behzad has said.
The country’s power generation capacity is currently at 68.38 GW, he added.
Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan (including Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
Based on the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan, Iran should annually add 5000 MW to its power generation capacity.
Iran plans to boost its electricity generation capacity to reach 73GW by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (March 2016).
