TEHRAN - Mohammad Bagher Nobakht, Iran’s vice-president for planning and strategic supervision, announced that the new administration will try to allocate bigger amounts of cash payments to low-income families if the second phase of the subsidy reform plan is ratified.

Addressing the parliament on Monday, Nobakht said new President Hassan Rohani is determined to push ahead with the subsidy reform plan and direct cash payments will continue as before.

“The policy is to increase the amount of cash handouts to low-income classes in a calculated form,” the trained economist said.

Parliament on January 5, 2010 passed the subsidy reform plan, allowing the government to replace subsidies on food and energy (80% of total) with targeted social assistance and direct cash handouts.

To ease the economic pain of lost subsidies, the government on December 18, 2010 started to distribute 455,000 rials/month (i.e. $19 per person/month) to 90% of the general population.
