Lack of due attention to self-sufficiency in the agriculture sector led to irregular imports of products, and the irregular imports should be curbed, Hojjati said on Wednesday, which was the third day of parliamentary debates on President Hassan Rohani's nominee for ministerial posts, the Mehr News Agency reported.

The issue of food security in the country is very worrying today, so that agricultural imports amounted to 10.3 million tons in the third five-year development plan (2000-2005). In the fourth development plan the figure rose to 13.8 million tons. During the recent three years, 16.6 million tons of agricultural products have been imported, he noted.

He also voiced concern about insufficient investment in the agriculture sector.

In July, head of the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran, Hamid Safdel, said that Iran exported $4.2 billion worth of agricultural products in the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20.

Based on statistics, Iran is ranked the 30th worldwide in terms of exporting food products, the official mentioned.

On January 20, IRNA quoted the Agriculture Ministry official Naser Tavakkoli as saying that Iran plans to increase its agricultural exports to 118 million tons in the current Iranian calendar year from 107 million tons in the past year.
