LONDON -(MarketWatch)- Ministers in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will need to meet if prices continue falling, Iran's representative with the producers' group said Friday.

However, Muhammad Ali Khatibi, Iran's OPEC governor, in remarks on Iran's oil ministry Website Shana, said it was too early to say what direction oil prices would take going forward.

The official, whose country holds OPEC's rotating presidency, was speaking after oil prices Thursday dropped by over 5% on the back of a broader market selloff driven by economic concerns in Europe and the U.S.
