TEHRAN — There is no nutritional restriction for those diabetic patients who observe nutritious diet, a dietician says.

They should balance daily fats, sugar and proteins and consume slow absorbing food items like whole grain bread, fruits and vegetables, Masood Kimiagar tells ISNA.

Kimiagar says diabetes mellitus, one of the common endocrinology disorders, is classified as insulin dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetes.

He insists that overweight people are more prone to non-insulin dependent or type 2 diabetes mellitus. Physical inactivity, overeating, simple sweeteners, and soft drinks are to the blame for diabetes mellitus.

Kimiagar, a professor of Shahid Beheshti University, adds consuming more amounts of refined flour, white bread, and soda drinks which contain more absorbable sugars, promote inherent susceptibility to diabetes mellitus.

- Fasting blood sugar is normalized through weight loss

If a non-obese diabetic’s daily calorie intake is 2400 calorie, he should take 2000 calorie a day to achieve ideal body weight, Kimiagar explains.

- Olive, walnut oil necessary for diabetics

The dietitian insists that olive oil and walnut oil are necessary and should be taken regularly.

Kimiagar recommends use of 2 cups of vegetables and 3-4 servings of fruits. He says one should take one type of fruit with each meal.

- 3-4 fresh carrots a day permitted

Diabetic patients can take 3-4 fresh carrots a day but cannot drink a glass of carrot juice because of containing 10-15 carrots, the dietitian says.
