TEHRAN — Type 1 diabetics are organized and trained how to manage one of the most common endocrinology diseases by Gabric Diabetes Education Association(GDEA). GDEA is an Iranian NGO founded in 2006 by key endocrinologists and highly motivated patients with type 1 diabetes. - GDEA vision GDEA vision is to improve the lives of people with diabetes and promote primary, secondary and tertiary prevention via education and raising awareness. Most of the GDEA staff are well controlled diabetic patients who encourage other diabetics to learn self-management of diabetes. Marking the 5th anniversary of its establishment, sugary balloon celebration was held at Shahid Beheshti Medical University on Thursday. Almost 100 type 1 diabetics, along with their families, took part in the celebration enthusiastically. Most of the participant patients were kids or in their teens. A sweet girl, just two years old, was among the patients. - Gabric is an educational association Gabric is not a therapeutic organization. It is an educational association with more than 40,000 members. It was ranked the 1st educational organization in the Middle East and North Africa in 2010 for presenting 15 various training programs, Hormoz Keykhanzadeh, a type 1 diabetic patient and the general director of the association, told the Tehran Times. - Board of trustees Top Iranian university professors are fulfilling their duties as board of trustees. They are trying to direct the association in a proper scientific and logical way. - ‘My friend insulin’ plan GDEA has presented a plan called ‘my friend insulin’. It is intended to encourage the patients to use insulin regularly and consider insulin as their real friend and not an enemy. - History of insulin production In 1921 the Canadian scientists Fredrick G. Banting, Charles H. Best, J.J.R. Macleod, and James B. Collip discovered insulin, a peptide (small protein hormone) which lowers blood sugar. They extracted insulin from the islets of animal pancreases. Up to that time type 1 diabetes was a virtual death sentence for patients suffering from it. Now, it could for the first time be treated successfully. The researchers gave the patent rights to the University of Toronto so that diabetics worldwide could survive by insulin. The scientists refused financial gain in order to serve science, research and humankind – and to conquer diabetes. - By the people, for the people Since Gabric is an NGO it is supported by the people and it receives no state funds. GDEA calls for more peoples’ donation in order to spread its educational plans throughout the country.
