TEHRAN — Cardiologists from Iran and Turkey held their first forum on arrhythmias, heart failure, and interventional cardiology in Tehran

The conference which opened on Wednesday at Hotel Espinas will last until Thursday.

Leading Iranian and Turkish cardiologists present eight cases and share knowledge on cardiologic disease.

The forum is the 1st of its kind in a series of scientific collaborations between Iran and Turkey. Leading Iranian and Turkish cardiologists are taking part in the meeting, sharing their experiences in prevention and treatment of heart diseases, the number 1 killer in both countries.

Bahram Aminian, a cardiologist from Shiraz Medical Sciences University, told reporters that Iran and Turkey started scientific collaboration on general cardiology about three years ago in Antalya, Turkey.

Today, Aminian said, the cooperation has developed to more specific areas in cardiology, i.e. interventional cardiology, arrhythmia and heart failure.

He went on to say that the main causes of heart disease in Iran are old age, smoking, high blood pressure or hypertension, inactivity, hyperlidemia, and diabetes mellitus.

Aminian suggested that walking for 30 minutes five times a week is considered a very effective plan to prevent heart disease.

He also confirmed that air pollution, especially in large cities, is among other important risk factors that should be taken into consideration by authorities.

Dr. Majid Haghjoo, the secretary of the forum and a cardiologist from Tehran Medical Sciences University, also pointed to advances made in manufacturing medical devices used for treating patients who suffer from arrhythmia and are vulnerable to heart failure.

For example, he said, in patients with severe types of arrhythmia a medical device can be implanted in some specific arteries such as carotid artery in the neck area that is activated in a short duration of 2-3 seconds to induce sudden cardiac shock, in order to prevent sudden brain death, he explained.

-- Healthy lifestyle, healthy heart

Dr. Ali Oto, the Turkish cardiologist and chairman of the forum, said Turkey and Iran as two neighbors who enjoy historical ties are expected to establish close scientific cooperation.

Oto, the head of Heart and Health Foundation of Turkey, said heart disease is the No.1 killer of Turkish people.

The main risk factors are obesity and diabetes, however there is a big campaign against smoking and junk food in Turkey, Oto explained.
