TEHRAN – The annual children’s lazy eye (amblyopia) screening plan started on Sunday at a national scale for those between ages 3-6, says Ali Mohammad Zangeneh, a Welfare Organization official. The screening which started at kindergartens will last for one month. Zangeneh says 51,000 urban and rural locales are testing children’s visual acuity and 320 permanent centers are active in the lazy eye screening plan. The lazy eye screening plan is done in three phases: In the first stage kids’ eyes are examined, in the second stage suspected cases are referred to optometrist, and in the third phase children with eye disorders are examined by ophthalmologist. Lazy eye screening plan began in 1997 and so far 200,000 kids have been diagnosed with lazy eye.
