 TEHRAN — The amputated arm of a workman was reattached on October 22 by an Iranian surgery team led by Seyed Fazlollah Sajjadi, according to ISNA. The workman’s hand was cut off by a cement maker machine as a result of which his entire left arm, hand, scapula, clavicle and all the muscles were amputated. He was taken to a few hospitals but was not admitted by any of them because of the severity of the case. After 6-7 hours during which his arm was carried around in an ice filled plastic container, he was finally admitted by surgeon Sajjadi for a very unique 7-hour- long operation. Sajjadi says the patient’s arteries and veins were reconstructed by using the patient’s own groin vein known as saphenous. Of course, Sajjadi said, there was no nerve transplant, because the extent of damage to the hand nerves was unknown. Neurosurgeons, however, say nerves could be revived 2-3 months after the injury.
